Speaking about the Republican Party's defeat in the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that voters agreed with his policies toward Iran but were perhaps unwilling to accept the short-term consequences—higher fuel costs—as the Democratic Party took control of both houses of Congress.
In a telephone interview with Fox News, Mr. Trump said: "The public agrees with what I am doing regarding Iran, but they were perhaps unwilling to accept the short-term consequence of paying more for fuel. And you know, I understand this point. I want to tell everyone that this is a short-term issue, but it has long-term benefits."
Mr. Trump noted that fuel prices in Iowa had dropped as low as $1.85 per gallon before the United States took action against Iran. However, fuel prices would drop again soon.
The U.S. President added: "I did the right thing in history. I think people will evaluate me as having done the right thing, but it caused us to go through a time that was not very pleasant."
When asked by reporters whether he would take further action against Iran, Mr. Trump replied: "I don't want to tell you... but of course, if Iran does not behave itself, I will certainly take action.
If they are willing to comply, we can reach an agreement. And if that agreement is binding and good, ensuring that they will not have nuclear weapons, that would be a good thing. But if not, I will end this matter very easily."
