Katie Zacharia officially resigned as White House Press Secretary on Friday, October 16, 2026, after just five days in the role—marking the shortest tenure for a White House Press Secretary in U.S. history.
President Donald Trump had first announced her appointment on October 9, 2026, and she held her only press briefing on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Her sudden departure was sparked by mounting controversy over her credentials after reports revealed that while she had attended law school, she was not a licensed attorney and had not passed the bar exam, despite frequently being introduced as one. The scrutiny intensified following a rocky debut briefing that lasted under 15 minutes, as well as a tense Fox News interview on Thursday, October 15, where host Sean Hannity pressed her on her legal background.
On October 16, President Trump publicly suggested she step aside for her own well-being, remarking to reporters that the media scrutiny had made her life miserable and asking, "Katie, do you need this?" Shortly after, Zacharia officially stepped down with a warm farewell statement thanking the president, leaving the White House once again in search of a press secretary.
